Visual field testing can detect any damage to the optic nerve.
Damage to the optic nerve can occur in glaucoma, trauma to the eye or brain/head, strokes, tumors or aneurysms involving the optic nerve and/or brain, multiple sclerosis, toxins in the retina or optic nerve, etc....
We recommend baseline visual field testing for any patients who are 40 or over, who have a personal or family history of glaucoma, who are experiencing headaches, who have had any type of blunt head or eye trauma (like a car accident victim or a boxer).
